Shogren Apartments is located between North Lindström Lake and South Lindström Lake on the west side of downtown Lindström, Minnesota, known as "America's Little Sweden". Situated between Chisago City to the west and Center City (the Chisago County Seat) to the east, Lindström is approximately 40 miles northeast from Minneapolis or Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Directly across the street from the building is a statue of Karl-Oskar & Kristina Nilsson, the fictional heroes of Vilhelm Moberg’s series of novels The Emigrants, which tell the story of Swedish emigration to America. A replica of a statue in Karlshamn, Sweden, it is an attraction for tourists from Sweden and from all over the world who come to Lindström because of its Swedish heritage.
The statue is a recognizable landmark located next to the County Press Building on US Highway 8. It is just two city blocks to the Post Office. Memorial City Park is across the street from the building and contains the Chisago County Veterans Memorial. Restaurants and shops in the downtown district are within easy walking distance.
Lindström is a small city that has a lot to offer and it is a great place to live.
The city doesn’t just celebrate its Swedish heritage—it showcases it proudly, right down to the city-limit signs.
In 2015, then-Governor Mark Dayton issued an executive order directing the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to restore the two dots—known as umlauts—to the city’s signage. This decision came after it was discovered that MnDOT had quietly removed the umlauts, citing federal highway regulations that don’t accommodate them. For more than two decades, the signs had included the umlauts, until they were dropped due to compliance concerns.
Today, the umlauts are back where they belong—not only on the city-limit signs, but also throughout town, including right here on our website!
